Teddy in Shakespeare-land: Stratford Upon Avon

Last winter, the time came to make a change.
It happens like that while you are just thinking about planning your holidays for the year, the phone rings and everything changes in 5 days.
You find yourself looking for a new hole, pack your stuff, call for help, and in 48 hours, puff! You are in a new place, to explore and discover and make the most of the experience.

So I was just in the middle of my winter sleep and I suddenly had to move.

Finding a new place to stay has not been easy at all, I didn't have much time and once I also got a bit lost in the middle of nowhere, just a road on one side and the country on the other, so windy to make  of my umbrella a useless but quite artistic and creative structure, while it started raining and snowing. Amazing.

These are the moments when you realize that, on the life stage, angels just show up to help when it's most needed before disappearing again, and pubs are serving hot tea and chocolate for very important reasons in this world.

Shakespeare Birthplace

So here I am: Stratford Upon Avon, Warwickshire. The land of William Shakespeare.

Now it's the time to enjoy a very English experience, mixed up in culture, history, accent and pronunciation, Shakespeare works, lovely local shops and everything opposite to the 9 million people city.

Stratford on Avon is definitely lovely, old streets and houses, cottages and shops, the Shakespeare trail, quiet life and the sound of birds.

The riverside, with the Theatre leading it, is a mix of relaxing and sportive areas, spaces to live and enjoy.

Attractions and entertainments go together with the quiet life, made interesting by tourists from all over the world who come to visit the most famous of British writers.

Shakespeare inspires everything, from the name of the streets to the name of the shops and products sold, I couldn't say the most creative interpretation as it's fantasy blooming at every corner.

I arrived exactly on time to be part of Shakespeare 400, the celebrations of his death's anniversary, that will go on with events from here to London all year long.

So let's see which new adventures, experiences, and news await me!!!

Something new in Leicester Square: William Shakespeare!

Passi qualche settimana in giro a trovare i tuoi parenti orsetti e al ritorno Londra è già cambiata! Con tante sorprese!
Eccone una: dopo più di un anno dall'inizio dei lavori è stata restituita a Leicester Square la statua di William Shakespeare.
Per mesi (dal settembre dello scorso anno) fare una sosta qui significava sedersi di fronte a pannelli colorati con le citazioni più interessanti tratte dalle sue opere.
Adesso invece è tornato l'originale, in splendida forma, contornato da fontane che sembrano danzare con lui, creando innumerevoli giochi d'acqua.
I lavori erano stati iniziati per riportare la statua al suo splendore (risale al 19° secolo, opera dell'architetto James Knowles) ma anche per mettere la parola fine alle scalate della stessa da parte di ragazzini e turisti: a questo scopo infatti è stata installata una nuova fontana. Pare però che agli orsetti non sia vietato salirci sopra, quindi sperimenterò ;-)
Ha il sapore della festa vedere Shakespeare osservare bonario tutti gli eventi teatrali e cinematografici di importanza internazionale che hanno luogo proprio qui.
E' il caso di dire: "All's well that ends well"!

Late summer sunny days

E' già settembre, le scuole sono ricominciate e file ordinate di ragazzini in divisa popolano le strade al termine delle lezioni.
Eppure questa fine estate ci regala ancora giornate di temperature ottime e, per quanto il tempo possa sempre cambiare da un momento all'altro, poter approfittare di sole splendente e 25 gradi significa una sola cosa: godersi parchi e quartieri a più non posso.
Così il nostro amico Teddy non ci ha pensato su due volte e dopo una bella scorpacciata di miele per affrontare al meglio la giornata, ha preso il primo bus e, entrato trionfalmente in Piccadilly Circus, si è lanciato alla volta di Regent's Park.
Queste oasi di verde fanno dimenticare per un attimo la frenesia del traffico della Capitale e una volta varcato il portone di ingresso sembra veramente un'altra dimensione. Pace, verde, fiori e specchi d'acqua a perdita d'occhio ricaricano di tutte le fatiche.
Ciò non impedisce però a questi giardini di essere parte integrante delle animazioni cittadine, ospitando spesso pic-nic, festival all'aperto e attività culturali di ogni tipo che li rinnovano ad ogni stagione.
Varcare il portone di Regent's Park è un po' come entrare nel paese delle meraviglie, macchie di verde in cui gli inglesi leggono libri sotto gli alberi o consumano la pausa pranzo dimenticando per un'ora giacca e cravatta, fanno da contorno al cuore del parco, il Queen Mary's Garden, in cui cespugli di rose di ogni tipo spruzzano di colori pastello il paesaggio, i sentieri si inoltrano tra ponti, laghetti e la cascatella di una collina, il Garden Cafè offre ristoro tra fiori colorati e l'Open Air Theatre intrattiene turisti e non con opere teatrali tra le più conosciute.
Il nostro Teddy invece può fare nuove amicizie tra i pennuti che popolano il parco.

It's September already , schools have started again and neat rows of boys in uniform are in the streets after school .
Yet this late summer gives us days of temperatures still excellent and, as the weather can always change from one moment to the next, take advantage of glorious sunshine and 25 degrees means one thing : to enjoy the parks and neighborhoods as they could .
So our friend Teddy did not think twice about it and after a fine meal of honey to better face the day, took the first bus and entered triumphantly in Piccadilly Circus, was launched at a time of Regent 's Park.
These oases of green make you forget for a moment the chaotic traffic of the capital and once inside the front door looks really another dimension. Peace , greenery, flowers and water features as the eye can recharge for all the effort .
This does not preclude , however, in these gardens to be an integral part of the animations towns , often hosting picnics, outdoor festivals and cultural activities of all kinds which they renewed every season.
Crossing the gate of Regent 's Park is a little ' how to enter the wonderland , patches of green where the British read books under the trees , or eat their lunch hour forgetting for a suit and tie , surrounded by the heart of the park the Queen Mary 's Garden, where rose bushes of all kinds of pastel colors splashing the landscape , the trails meander through bridges, ponds and waterfall of a hill , the Garden Cafe offers dining options with colorful flowers and the Open Air Theatre entertains tourists and not with plays among the best known .Our Teddy , however, can make new friends among the birds that inhabit the park.

Come perdere quindi l'occasione di godersi Sogno di Una Notte di Mezza Estate all'aperto in questa cornice paradisiaca? Teddy ha avuto la fortuna di trovare posto per l'ultima matinée e davvero non smette di stupirsi di fronte alle tante, infinite reinterpretazioni di Shakespeare sempre nuove anche dopo secoli. Una versione se vogliamo metro-fantasy, in grado di tenere col fiato sospeso fino a soluzione dell'incantesimo di Puck, per poi sciogliersi in una grande festa in grado di coinvolgere tutto il pubblico presente.

How to lose then the opportunity to enjoy A Midsummer Night's Dream in this frame? Teddy has had the good fortune to find a place for the last matinee and really never ceases to be amazed by the many, countless reinterpretations of Shakespeare always new even after centuries. A version -if we want to- metro-fantasy, able to hold their breath until the solution of the spell of Puck, to melt into one big party that engages the entire audience.

Sì, settembre è arrivato, con quella luce diversa, il sole sempre caldo ma meno diretto, i tramonti più struggenti dell'anno, che qui durano un po' di più, l'autunno che si avvicina. Tempo per Teddy di preparare le provviste!
