European Living Costs

Europe has a reputation as one of the more expensive expat destinations, which is highlighted in the 2013 Expat Expenses League Table, with Ireland (37th), Netherlands (35th), Italy (34th), UK (33rd), and France (32nd). The Expat Expenses League Table ranks countries in terms of “expat economics”, whereby the higher a country’s ranking, the more financially advantageous it proves for expats. The low ranking of these European countries means, simply, that expats will not get as much for their money there.
A combination of lower earning potential coupled with higher expenses explains these low rankings on the league table, but there are many ways expats can enjoy a cost-effective lifestyle on the European continent:
1.       Move to Spain: At 15th, España sits eight spaces above its nearest European rival, making it our top pick for European Expat Expenses.

2.       Ride a bike:  Public transport is a major factor in pushing up living costs for European-based expats. But the good news is that many European expat destinations are hotspots for cycling commuters. Take to the bicycle lanes of Amsterdam, Copenhagen or Seville and burn calories while you save euros.

3.       Shop at local markets: Europe is known for its variety of produce, seasonal markets and local delicacies. And thanks to street sellers, gourmet food doesn’t always have to come with a hefty price tag.

4.       Make friends: More quality chat with local friends will translate to substantially cheaper phone bills, as you have less need to call home – and Europe is a great place to forge new friendships. The prospect of finding friendship in the UK, for example, is so good that more than two in five (43%) expats say that they prefer the company of local friends over fellow expats.

5.       Relax: Nearly 2 in 5 (39%) of expats surveyed on the cost of living abroad had the perception they were spending less since relocation, even if the figures didn’t bear this out. The other cultural and lifestyle perks to living in Europe may just outweigh financial considerations.

4seasons/4places pics of the River Thames

Thames from a window, January 2014
It's winter even if it's not so cold (yet...?) but sometimes it rains... a lot. Really a lot.
So enjoying my hibernation in my warm hole I keep an eye to our glorious Thames, that goes up and down... luckily down!
I really hope it will go back to its usual level because other bear-friends are having some problems at the moment. In the end, it's only 3 or 4 months to go...!!! Where are you Spring?

Waiting for it I want to leave some 4seasons/4 places pics of this important river.

Souvenir from the italian Alps: Fondue Recipe

There's something I simply adore when I spend time on holiday with my bear-family: cooking all together!
This time we tried a really famous mountain recipe and it tasted absolutely amazing: the fondue alla valdostana and I'm happy to give you our recipe, as souvenir from your little bear.
Well, the real fondue alla valdostana needs only Fontina cheese, but I admit that we mixed different kind of cheese in the end, and the result is definitely fantastic, so you can try it with any cheese and option you prefer.
You just need:
milk 250g
2 egg's yolks (some recipes say 4... you can choose)
butter 40g
400g Fontina cheese or mixed cheese (Fontina, Emmenthal, Gruyère, blue cheese like french Roquefort or italian Gorgonzola): in this case your fondue will be really european, mixing some of the best Alps' existing cheese. By choosing one or two of them you will simply decide which citizenship your fondue will have (I would try all of them!).
Put the chopped cheese in a pan with milk for a couple of hours (we didn't have so much time, so we kept it for half an hour and it was delicious anyway!)
Heat until it's completely melted and transfer into a fondue pot, with a candle below, to keep it warm (but pay attention not to burn it or it will change flavour!)
If you like it, you can add nutmeg or truffle oil.
And now, just eat with toasted bread and croutons! It will be a tasting, lovely and funny time to share with your loved ones!

latte 250g
2 tuorli d'uovo (alcune ricette dicono 4... potete scegliere)
burro 40g

Let's meet Ms Befana!

The new year has started, Christmas holidays are over... uhm... it's never easy, but you must know that in Italy we have a holiday on January 6th, the Three Kings indeed, but we call it Epifania, from greek epifaneia, or in the folk way: Befana.
Well in this date a legend says that a ugly old woman comes at night on a mop with socks for everybody  containing sweets and little presents, If you've not been good during the year she will bring you coal, so be careful!
I have been really a good little bear during the past year so I was able to have 3 days off and join my bear-family on the Alps.
It was so lovely, spending bright sunny days on the snow.
As I arrived my dear brother bear welcomed me with this amazing cake: the famous italian all-butter Pandoro filled with soft cheese cream, chopped chocolate and cherries... What a fabulous way to start!

10 fairytale places in and around London

Walking around London is a wonderful experience, filled with constant twists and turns, people are always different, unique angles and details, scenes that are constantly changing.
I sometimes feel like Alice in Wonderland and the city takes a fantastic connotation.
So I picked up 10 of the places that will give you the idea of being in another dimension, in a different era, travelling not only with distances but also over time, cultures, customs, literature .. . It will give you the idea of being in a fairy tale... and of course it is, going around with our lovely Teddy!

Peter Pan Statue , Kensington Gardens
Walking through the park you'll meet a few lost tourists asking you where the statue of Peter Pan is. It seems like a hunt treasure, in its discretion, so tiny, seems to have placed there from Neverland, ready to leave soon. In the end, Peter Pan  can not stay among adults too long. Perhaps this is why people look for it with a bit of concern, there, along the water course, with a little shortness of breath, as if hiding the fear not to locate it at all and loose a touch of fresh childish spirit, as if Peter had gone too soon from the life of all of us.

Peter Pan, Kensington Gardens
Paddington Bear Statue, Paddington Station
A bear, a giant of English literature for children, but also adults who admire with immense tenderness that little bear from Peru, collected at the station with a suitcase and nothing more , and his adventures to settle into a new family , a new country, an expatriate for excellence that best expresses the disorientation of those who daily faces many adventures without knowing how it will turn out. Paddington Bear is waiting to welcome or greet you knowing that there will be nothing but a "goodbye and see you soon".

Tudor Court Feltham
A corner of paradise, a court of another era where every corner has a detail that sets it apart, and it seems that the characters of Shakespeare or Jane Austen can get out of those doors at any moment to get involved in some comedy or tragedy or simply to offer a cup of tea, peering what happens  from the windows of the houses at a lower level.

Duck's cottage
Duck island Cottage St James Park
St James Park is all a fairy tale, but there is a corner at Duck Island Cottage, where they seem to be suddenly transferred in the heart of the Black Forest and some strange character that may surprise you. If you are lucky enough you'll get the black swan, regal and lonely, to soak in this atmosphere by the Brothers Grimm.

A corner of Kensington Palace Gardens
Kensigton Gardens
There is a hedge maze in front of Kensington Palace, which leads to the cafe and takes you straight into Alice's Wonderland, an enchanted place but with the certainty that the Queen in this case won't cut off the head , but rather invites you to try one of the noblest scones of London.

Queen Mary 's Garden bed of roses
From summer to winter, following the path that starts from Regents Park you come to this expanse of roses of all types and colors (at least 12 thousand are arranged in 85 different beds) , and circularly arranged by type and name. The benches that surround them are among the best places in London where you can read and relax.

Queen Mary's Garden

Battersea Park
In Battersea Park there is a wilder area in contact with water, the Ducks Pond, where it almost seems to see families of aquatic birds living their family life among the reeds, while the opposite side to the Ladies Pond has a ordered swarm of plants and colorful flower beds. The only one missing is the ugly duckling , but perhaps it has already become a beautiful swan.

Battersea Park
The Walled Garden, Sunbury -on-Thames
Sunbury-on-Thames
Again, this is a real surprise : the garden opens at the end of a tunnel surrounded by a vineyard over the fencing wall , perfect rectangle with English flower beds and statues beautifully graded and sorted. The cafe has an open veranda on it, to savor a cup of tea and a slice of cake dipped in this enchanted place.

Greenwich
Greenwich
The time goes mad and returns to his seat at the observatory at Greenwich, where the meridian leads the time in the world, the hours are calculated with the hands, the shadows, the play of light, where you see the time flying with the desire to fantasizing that you just need to change the meridian and see what happens then or go back to correct something.

Twickenham, York House Garden
At York House Garden, Inside the park a point opens, where Oceanides, Statue of Italian import, in its immensity urges the viewer to go higher, to reach something far, to enjoy the freedom that challenges the sky, walking on the clouds, beyond the limits of the land, while among the flower beds and benches chase squirrels.

Twickenham, York House Garden

Happy New Year! 2014 mode: activated!

Happy New Year Everybody!!! I am just slowly waking up from the most unpredictable New Year's Eve I have ever experienced.
Firstly, yesterday, I helped a lot of other nice and kind bear friends to prepare their party and enjoy it. Then, at 10o'clock I was unexpectedly free. I had 2 hours to plan my londoner NYE, without any plan! So, I imagined some options: the quietest, due to the fact that I had not eaten since the morning and it was supposed to rain, I took inspiration from a famous italian movie scene, Un Americano a Roma, where the unforgotten Alberto Sordi eats an enormous plate of delicious spaghetti. It would have been useful for a little bear like me to renovate my energy with such good food, but I prefered to leave this choice for January, 1st, today, when I have more time to spend in cooking, and I can maybe enjoy this really funny and interesting movie of the real italian culture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-CFmuj6jgE
Secondly I was suggested to go to Richmond: there's a corner in the Park where it's possible to see the Fireworks at the London Eye with a beautiful view.
But 2 hours are a lot of time indeed: you can do whatever you want with such a long time! So, I ran home on my little legs, prepared my rucksack with chips, biscuits and a can of Coke to open at midnight (it would have been sad non to have anything to drink at all at that point!), ran to the Tube, came out at Piccadilly, reached Trafalgar Square at 11,40! It was not possible to go closer to the Thames, it was so full of people from all over the world! So, as usual and as you can see, I reached one of my perfect pole-positions ;) We followed the countdown on the big screen, and at Midnight what a wonderful mix of Big Ben's sound, songs, fireworks, energy and enthusiasm! It was 2014 in London, Greenwich timezone!!!
After that, it was possible to reach different points of the city center where free buses were available to bring people home. This is such a fantastic city!
So Happy New Year everybody, with warm hearts, kindness and lot of love!
Yours Teddy.

Buon anno a tutti!
